The Need is great The time is now
There are major changes going on with abortion protocols that affect our community deeply. While medication abortions have been in existence for a while, the ease and accessibility of receiving them is changing significantly.
A medication abortion is a medical procedure where a woman receives a series of medications to take at both the abortion provider and at home. One of these medications blocks the hormone, progesterone, from continuing to nurture the pregnancy so the baby passes away. The second medication causes the woman’s uterus to contract, expelling the baby’s body. Over half of all abortions are medication abortions.
Before this year, to receive the medication abortion a woman had to see a medical provider in person. And, depending on the state, was required to receive an ultrasound to determine the location and dating of the pregnancy. Abortion complications can include hemorrhage, infection, incomplete abortion, and possible death. If the pregnancy is located outside of the uterus (ectopic pregnancy), this can be life-threatening. In short, meeting with the medical provider in person was for her safety.
So, what is Changing?
Earlier this year, the FDA removed these safety measures and approved ‘Self-Managed’ or ‘Telehealth Abortions’. Abortion activists claim these safety measures are a barrier to women having access to abortion. In an effort to make abortion more accessible, what they are actually doing is putting her at major physical and emotional risk.
With these approvals, a woman would be able to obtain abortion medications online and administer them to herself without any type of medical supervision required.
There is no requirement to confirm if she is actually pregnant, the location of the pregnancy, or how far along she is. Some providers are still choosing to offer more safety measures and medical oversight, but it’s no longer required and is now left up to the discretion of each abortion provider.
Even though the dangers of self-managed abortions may seem obvious, the ease and anonymity of “ordering your abortion online” can be extremely appealing to a woman who is in a difficult and scary situation. The natural appeal to avoid additional stress at an overwhelming moment is very understandable. Often, she is in a desperate place and just trying to survive.

For a woman who’s started the abortion pill process and regrets her decision, APR provides the chance to reverse the effects of the first pill and continue her pregnancy safely. Thrive will offer a 24/7 APR hotline.
Offering More Sonographer Hours
Having online scheduling will increase the number of women who contact us in need of ultrasound appointments. Time frames are really important to a woman considering an abortion, so having a sonographer available at her time of need is crucial. Final Building Renovations and Landscaping
There are a few finishing touches to the inside and outside of our building, to make sure Thrive Medical Clinic looks welcoming and professional.
